霍金的谦逊和周国平的“谦逊”
在电视上看到一个访谈节目，是哲学家周国平与主持人杨澜对坐聊天。他们说到爱情婚姻什么的，又说到孩子。杨澜问周国平，“您的女儿有没有提出什么您回答不了的问题？”这个提问非常好，它好就好在像一架云梯，可以把哲学家和他的女儿同时带到高处。果然，周先生微笑着、带着一点余意未尽的惊奇说：“有啊！她问我，什么是时间？我就回答不上来。”杨澜也扬了扬眉毛，礼貌地表示出性质相同的惊奇。
一个孩子问一个哲学家“什么是时间”，对于孩子和哲学家父亲来说，都富有意味。当然，更有意思的是，哲学家机智地、尽可能谦逊地表达了对这个问题的无知。如果周国平先生真的给出了一个什么答案，不仅他女儿会失望，相信杨澜和我等电视观众同样会失望。一个答案，无论正确与否，都会让这个桥段丧失戏剧性。哲学家暴露自己对常识的无知，没有比这更激动人心的事情了。

霍金是个传奇般的科学家，他在理论物理方面的见解，经常让教皇都感到紧张，因为他的大爆炸学说显示，在宇宙创生的过程中，上帝其实是碌碌无为的。在大爆炸奇点之后，宇宙就按照物理定律开始运转，即便存在着一个上帝，他也只能始终拢着袖子在一旁看戏，他老人家在宇宙中甚至连一个像样的座位都没有。

霍金很好地回答过“什么是时间”，用他的《时间简史》一书。假如周国平先生读过这本书，他一定会给自己的女儿一个答案，即使这个答案不能得到孩子的认同。周先生在时间问题上的缄口不言，与他的知识背景有关，也与中国的教育缺陷有关。文理分家的短平快教育制度，让中国知识分子被人为地分成两个体系：科学工作者和人文学者。他们之间鸡犬不相闻，老死不相往来，都害怕进入对方的阵营，以免露出马脚。很少听说哪个哲学家懂一点物理学，也从没听说哪个数学家写过一行诗。大概也出于这个缘故，科学的求真冲动，与文学艺术的求美本能，总是无法在中国人的身上得到良好的融合。
很难想象的是，如果不能跟踪了解物理学的最新进展，哲学家还怎么可能思考那些终极问题，世界的意义与灵魂的归宿之类的问题。从这个意义上，断言当代中国没有真正的哲学家，应该是没有错的。他们只能用自己的局限眼光诠释西方经典，却不可能提出独特深远的个人见解，这不是他们的错，是中国教育的错。

所以我不责备周国平先生。在启发一代代少女的心智和情操方面，他实在已经竭尽所能了。
